Acai Berries: Buying Tips
With the growing popularity of acai berry supplements, it
is unsurprising that a number of online and brick and
mortar retailers have begun promoting the supplement as a
cure-all for everything from holding back the aging
process, to curing chronic fatigue syndrome. Check out our
article that discusses the
true makeup of acai and the health and wellness benefits it
provides for men and women.
You must be cautious when purchasing acai off the
Internet. As with any other online transaction,
buyer beware and check out your vendor.
Where does acai come from?
First and foremost, you should know that acai
berries are indigenous to the Amazonian rainforests,
and are primarily found in the temperate areas of
Northern Brazil. Be suspicious of any advertising
related to "grow your own acai berries". The acai palm
is notoriously difficult to grow outside the rainforest
region, and takes three plus years from germination to
bear fruit.
In addition, acai berries are highly perishable and,
without proper handling, will lose their their nutritional
value and begin decomposing within 24 hours of being
harvested. For this reason, you will typically not find
natural acai berries if you are outside their native
geographical region.
Most manufacturers of acai-based supplement products will
begin processing the berries within 24 hours of the harvest
in order to obtain the maximum nutritional benefits.
Acai is usually processed and packaged as juice, pulp, or
freeze-dried powder. Again, regardless of the packaging,
the processing must occur in the critical 24 hour window
after the harvesting of the berries.
During processing, preservatives are added that
significantly slow down the nutritional deterioration of
the acai. Current processing techniques allow for a shelf
life of anywhere from six months to a year for most of the
reputable acai-based products.
Check the packaging
Bearing all this in mind, the key points to remember and
look for are:
1. When buying packaged acai products, check the expiration
date and ensure their is ample time for consumption. If
there is no specified expiration date, check with the
vendor on shelf-life and their estimate of the time from
harvest to packaging.
2. Acai products require preservatives to prolong their
shelf life. However, you really want to make sure that
these preservatives are natural. Synthetic preservatives
will only detract from health benefits of the acai berries.
3. Check out the vendor. Some of the fly-by-night sellers
of liquid acai products will dilute the pure acai juice
with additives such as common apple juice or red wine, both
of which taste similiar to the acai.
It works for me!
I personally have noticed a definite improvement in my
energy levels and overall mood within minutes of drinking
acai berry juice, and have made it a permanent fixture in
my diet and supplement regimen.
As recommended here, I did my research and picked
Acai Berry Select as my
online vendor of choice for a quick and easy
capsule-based acai supplement. I have been very pleased
with both the quality of the product line and the level
of service I have experienced.
I also maintain a stock of liquid acai concentrate for
quick juice fixes. Here's a blurb about my online
source for liquid acai (and pomegranate) in a bottle:
"Antioxidants and Free Radicals, what do they have
in common? Generally, oxidation is a chemical reaction
which transmits electrons from substance to an oxidizing
agent, whenever there are free radicals. Free radicals
cause cell damage. So, what antioxidants actually do, they
interconnect with free radicals and prevent cell damage.
Scientists believe that free radicals play a role in
establishing disease like coronary heart disease, cancer,
atherosclerosis, dementia ,neurological damage autoimmune
diseases, and others. Finally, let me introduce to you,
